When volunteers are making an event, the motivation must be something other than money. Starting from the “we want you” announcement of AFF, it has always been about having a good time.

I was interested in AFF because, in addition to liking the idea of having fun with nice people, I wanted work experience in the culture sector. In many an internship the gist of it is that the unpaid intern gets to work the shredder or scrub the toilet, but in AFF there were real responsibilities for all motivated participants! It felt like Artova respected and valued the ideas and skills of our motley crew, a bunch with a very diverse background. This diversity made our event complete and multi-faceted, it couldn’t have been done without those different skills and points of view. The organisers should represent the same amount of diversity your desired audience has. The input from each team member spoke louder than any CV.

You learn by doing. New situations came up sometimes to the point of exhaustion and as there was only a month to get everything done, there wasn’t always time to sit down and just scratch one’s head. Sometimes I felt very incompetent next to my colleagues with university background because they had plenty of experience in working with projects and team work. I learned a lot about working in a culture organisation and planning ahead, and I also learned to use some new computer programs. Clear and simple online materials and notes left behind by previous teams helped us to really understand the event and the work we were doing.

I had reservations about haste, deadlines and a pre-determined end result and was surprised to find that they all made the organisation process more meaningful. I had always thought of myself as someone who likes to work independently, on her own, but this time working in a team felt comfortable and pleasant and it became the lifeblood of the entire event. Doing everything on one’s own would have been very frustrating, useless and way too intense.

The AFF employees showed us the ropes and what I thought was particularly great was that it was possible to tailor one’s job description to match one’s studies or career hopes, at least to some extent. The general atmosphere was very open, and any problems were discussed in intensive meetings where everyone’s voice was heard. You were allowed to ask questions. In this type of “communal” work, individual habits for doing things merged into one… although there were a few collisions we couldn’t avoid. Meeting regularly helped us to become a unified group. At every point in the process, everyone got to determine their own level of commitment. In voluntary work, it’s very important to have the feeling that they want me and my qualities for this task, not just some guy.

Mari Andersson ja Azar Saiyar deconstructed the Artova Kino concept into bite-size entities in Artova Film Festival (AFF) mini seminar 7.9.2012 (see the video in this post). They told about the joys and challenges of running a movie club that has established itself in the Helsinki movie scene. They also told about funding, facilities, hunting down rights to films, film traffic, motivation, ambition and the magic of the moving picture.

Mari Andesson ja Azar Saiyar purkivat Artova Kinon konseptin käsinkosketeltavaksi Artova Film Festival AFFin miniseminaarissa 7.9.2012. He kertoivat paikallisen, Helsingin elokuvakentälle paikkansa vakiinnuttaneen elokuvakerhon pyörittämisen iloista ja haasteista, rahoituksesta, tiloista, filmioikeuksien metsästämisestä, filmiliikenteestä, motivaatiosta, kunnianhimosta ja elokuvan lumosta.

Iiris valmistujaisissaan 3.9.2012

Matti Lahtinen, a Metropolia student, is adding the finishing touches to his creation, the virtual Design Dog Park. The idea is to enable people to enhance their experience in the dog park with the mobile application that also includes all the design elements. Also, as a kind of “by-product”, a browser-based 3D model has been created, which means that you can visit the place on-line where ever you are. The browser version is already in operation.

Metropolian opiskelija Matti Lahtinen on viimeistelemässä virtuaalista Design Koirapuisto työtään. Ajatuksena on mahdollistaa Design koirapuiston kokeminen mobiilisti paikan päällä kaikkine design elementteineen. (more…)

Hi! My name is Minna Reinilä, and at the turn of the year I started my work trial at culture and resident house Kääntöpaikka, where I run the everyday functions and take care of PR, and at Spirit of Artova, where I’m a co-ordinator. I’m sure I’ll find out in the near future what all that means. At this point, it would seem that I’ll participate in co-ordinating Arabianranta Street Festival and join the media relations team of AFF. Writing is a dear hobby of mine, and I’m very interested in sharing in this blog how I experience working in this kind of environment.

Tervehdys! (more…)

My House Arabianranta is a week-long event in autumn 2012 that charts the voyage of five local residential buildings from the drawing board of the architect into the everyday lives of the residents.
The event aims at raising awareness of how blocks of apartments are built, what factors affect the local architecture and how the Percent for Art principle can be seen in the art purchases of the buildings. More information about the initiative can be found here.
Would you like to introduce you home building or perhaps even your own home in the autumn during WDC Helsinki weeks or during Design Week? Sign your building up for My House Arabianranta. We pick the five most unique locations!
We are especially interested in:

  • environment that encourages spending time together
  • utilizing common areas in new ways
  • residents participating in the event

Let us know also if you already have in mind an enthusiastic contact person or if you have co-operated earlier with the architect and the artist of the building.
We are also searching for volunteers to make My House Arabianranta happen! Come and make use of your skills and interests in presenting the design of home living. You can take photos, act as our spokesperson, tell stories… Turn yourself in!
You can sign up until the 3rd of February to the contact person of the project: satu.onnela[]gmail.com
